Saphenous Vein Ablation is indicated to treat signfificant cases of saphenous vein reflux that are leading to the development of enlarging varicose veins, leg pain, leg swelling, leg fatigue, skin pigmentation, or other chronic leg symptoms. Treatment of Saphenous Reflux – Saphenous Vein Ablation The most common saphenous vein that develops venous reflux is the great saphenous vein. The vein reflux is gauged as mild, moderate, or severe. Saphenous vein reflux can involve one saphenous veins or multiple saphenous veins. The venous reflux ultrasound should also be performed in the standing position to be accurate. The ultrasound technician performing the venous duplex needs to be properly trainined in venous reflux testing in order for the studies to be accurate. Ultrasounds are also referred to as duplex studies or doppler studies. Saphenous vein reflux is diagnosed by a combination of physical examination and a venous ultrasound called a venous reflux ultrasound. Saphenous vein reflux is a progresive disease that worsens with time. Other patients with saphenous vein reflux do not have visible varicose veins but can exhibit the other leg symptoms described. The skin changes are often accompanied by enlarging varicose veins on the legs. The skin changes can include dermatitis, pigmentation, or ulcers. The pressure can also lead to symptoms of leg pain, leg fatigue, leg or ankle swelling, and skin changes of the ankles and feet. The resultant abnormal pressure build-up that occurs in the legs with saphenous vein reflux leads to varicose veins forming on the legs, ankles, or feet. Saphenous vein ablation is a cure for this condition. This is referred to as valve reflux, ie saphenous vein reflux. The defective valves in the legs lead to the vein flow in the legs reversing direction. Saphenous vein reflux disease occurs when the valves inside the superficial veins of the legs become defective. One of the most common forms of venous disease is saphenous vein reflux disease. Urgent results are always sent back to your doctor within 24 hours. If you have an appointment already booked with your referring doctor, please advise the sonographer at the time of your scan. The sonographer does not usually give you your results at the time of your examination, however your doctor will receive your scan results within a week. The diagnostic venous reflux examination will take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the extent and severity of your varicose veins.

If you have any questions or concerns before or during the scan, please feel free to ask the sonographer. Throughout the scan you will feel the gentle pressure from the transducer as it runs along the course of the blood vessels, and you will hear the sound of the Doppler from time to time, but there should be no major discomfort. The sonographer will assess the valves in your veins using pressure on your calf muscle which pushes blood up your leg and allows any reflux or‘back flow’ to be demonstrated. It is helpful if you do not wear tight underclothing, such as ‘step-ins’, or long legged underpants, such as boxer shorts. In order for the sonographer to easily access the lower limb veins, you will be asked to remove your footwear, and the outer clothing from your waist down. The diagnostic venous reflux ultrasound is performed with you in an upright position, either standing on a sturdy examination platform, which has a hand-rail for you to hold on to, or sitting on the edge of an examination couch. What veins will be checked in this examination?

  • previous treatment for varicose veins (sclerotherapy, thermal ablation or surgery).
  • painful clotting in the varicose veins (superficial thrombophlebitis).
  • bleeding from a vein near the skin surface.
  • an itchy rash (venous eczema) associated with varicose veins.
  • skin changes, such as brown pigmentation, in the lower part of your legs.
  • extensive ‘spider veins’ and dilated venules (small blue veins just below the skin surface).
  • Your doctor has requested this test for you because you may have one or more of the following presentations: The diagnostic venous reflux is a non-invasive method of checking the blood flow through the veins in your legs and assessing for any other venous abnormalities.
